Formerly an abandoned marina in Sturgeon Creek\, the area will be restored to provide terrestrial and coastal wetland habitat. The Sturgeon Creek Wetland project helps to improve water quality and provide much needed wetland habitat as part of the Lake Erie watershed.

DESCRIPTION:Fossils of Arkona – with Paul Bourque \nThe middle Devonian fossils around Arkona Ontario are invertebrates from a shallow\nmarine environment and are known internationally for their excellent quality. Rock\nhounds and retailers visit this area regularly. Paul will present the geologic and\nenvironmental background along with an overview of the animal groups represented. He\nwill also bring his collection of fossils from the Arkona area for your inspection. Paul\nhas a degree in geology and physical geography and has continued his interest and study\non the topic. He has also conducted field trips to the Arkona area and delivered other\ntalks related to geology.

DESCRIPTION:A little bird in big trouble: using Citizen Science to help the recovery of\n Chimney Swifts –  A talk by Liz Purves\, Ontario SwiftWatch Coordinator\, Bird Studies Canada. \nBirds that feed on flying insects while on the wing (“aerial insectivores”) are experiencing\nwidespread population declines across North America. One urban-dwelling aerial insectivore\, the\nChimney Swift\, is experiencing particularly steep population declines across its breeding range in\neastern North America\, likely because of a multitude of factors. Through the SwiftWatch project\,\nBird Studies Canada (BSC)\, its partners\, and hundreds of volunteers are working to help Chimney\nSwift recovery in Ontario and across the country\, largely by identifying\, monitoring\, and\npromoting stewardship of nest and roost sites. This talk will first provide an introduction to BSC\nand its broader Citizen Science initiatives\, then dive into the current state of Chimney Swifts and\nthe aerial insectivore guild\, and lastly share what BSC and Citizen Scientists are doing to help.

DESCRIPTION:Spiders of Ontario – Tom Mason has more than 32 years’ experience in the zoo world. He earned a BSc University of Guelph and a diploma in Zookeeping from Seneca College\, and served as the Curator of Invertebrates at the Toronto Zoo and acting Curator of Birds at the Toronto Zoo. He has traveled and studied natural ecosystems on 5 continents. Today\, he still leads tours for fish and reptile enthusiasts to Costa Rica. Tom has worked on three recovery teams for Ontario’s endangered species\, and has worked on conservation projects in Cuba and Costa Rica. In addition\, Tom has coaxed more than 50 species of reptiles and amphibians to reproduce in captivity. Tom will be speaking on those eight legged creatures that most love to hate\, the largely misunderstood Spiders of Ontario.

DESCRIPTION:Massasauga Recovery at Ojibway  – Prairie Jonathan Choquette will be giving a talk about his work to recover the local population of Massasauga Rattlesnakes. The Ojibway Prairie population of Massasaugas (Sistrurus catenatus) is one of only two populations of this species remaining in Canada’s Carolinian zone. It is geographically isolated from its Canadian counterparts by over 300 km\, is genetically unique\, and is the only representative of a tallgrass prairie population of this species in Canada. Historically\, Massasaugas were distributed across much of Essex County\, however\, by about the 1960s they had become eliminated from all but the Ojibway/LaSalle region. Since then\, things have only been getting worse for our little rattlers; the range of the Ojibway population has declined by an estimated 95% over the past 40 years! We are now at the point were less than a dozen adults remain. Although hundreds of\nhectares of suitable habitat have been protected within the Ojibway Prairie Complex and Greater Park Ecosystem\, much of this is unoccupied by Massasaugas\, and natural recolonization is hindered by roads\, development and small population size. In order to prevent complete extirpation of the Ojibway population\, and the ensuing collapse in Massasauga distribution and genetic variation in Canada\, intensive recovery work is of great necessity. Since 2013\, I have worked with Wildlife Preservation Canada to implement strategic recovery and monitoring actions recommended in the Recovery Strategy for the Massasauga in Canada. These actions include long-term monitoring\, threat reduction\, habitat protection and enhancement\, public outreach\, and population augmentation. Results from some of our recovery work to date will be presented. For example\, last year\, our field team observed three different Massasaugas using the habitat enhancement structures we created! We also started studying the hibernation habitat below-ground to help us choose the best sites for future releases. But there is still lots of work to do in order to secure the recovery of this ecologically and genetically unique component of Canadian herpetofauna.
