SUMMARY:Monthly Walk
DESCRIPTION:There are more than 80 km of connected\, safe\, off-road greenway trails for everyone in the region. This year we are going to give club members a chance to explore as much of them as possible! \nEver wondered what different parts of the trail are like? See flowers in bloom\, butterflies fluttering\, birds singing and many more creatures running about. This is a great opportunity to check out areas of the trail you are less familiar with. \nOur first walk will be held on April 19 at 10am from the Caesars Windsor Entrance (#17). This parking lot is located a short distance east of Walker Road and Essex 8 Road. \nMost of the Greenway is a flat\, gravel pathway. Although some parking lots have seasonal port-a-johns\, not all sections of the greenway have access to washrooms. \nSee the map for location details

SUMMARY:Birding with Pride
DESCRIPTION:Birding With Pride at Point Pelee National Park \nMay 2nd from 9:00am to 2:30pm \nJoin the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) at Point Pelee National Park for the annual Birding With Pride open house during the Festival of Birds! Join us at the Northwest Beach pavilion for refreshments and to meet fellow members of the birding community\, learn more about OFO\, and join guided bird hikes. Opening remarks will be made at 9:30am. \nThis event is a celebration of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community but all are welcome. We encourage all experiences including beginner and first-time birders to join. Creating a respectful\, welcoming\, and accessible environment is our priority as we enjoy spring migration at Point Pelee. \nHikes will leave from the Northwest Beach Parking Lot at 10:00am and 1:00pm and will be about one hour long. We recommend arriving about 15 minutes early if you are joining a hike so we can assign groups to leaders. OFO will have a table set up with refreshments in the Northwest Beach pavilion from 9:00am to 2:30pm so stop in for a visit at any time! \nAs in previous years\, this event is a fundraiser for Trans Wellness Ontario and their invaluable work in the community. Please consider making a donation at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/144700. We will also be collecting cash donations at the event.

SUMMARY:Understanding Myself as an Amphibian
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special film screening and Q&A with the filmmaker! \nUnderstanding Myself as an Amphibian is a Queer ecology documentary that explores the sexual diversity of the wildlife around us. Director May Matchim (she/her) draws connections between these incredible species and her own journey accepting her Transness. The title is a reference to the green frog\, an amphibian which is able to change its sex as it matures. \nThis film explores a variety of animal and plant subjects\, including same-sex bird parents raising chicks together\, and a group of salamanders that’s entirely female. It also examines the exclusionary attitudes in biology and conservation throughout time\, and how these attitudes have influenced our understanding of animal behaviour. \nWith this film\, May hopes to help encourage Queer and Trans viewers to develop a stronger relationship with the natural world. Historically\, we’ve been excluded from outdoor spaces and faced discrimination within the biological and environmental sciences. She hopes this project is able to address these continuing barriers through on-camera representation and the celebration of Queer wildlife. In this way\, Queer and Trans viewers can see their experiences reflected on screen. By understanding ourselves through the lens of biodiversity\, the film suggests that we extend community to non-human animals. \n*Members attending for the film – at the gate tell them you are there to attend the film screening and you will to be charged admission fee to the park. There will be popcorn too! \nMay Matchim (she/her) is a Trans woman filmmaker based in Toronto. She has a BA in Film Production from York University. In 2022 she graduated from Fleming College’s Environmental Visual Communications program. Following this\, she completed a communications placement at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on Vancouver Island. A keen naturalist\, she’s an avid birder and member of the Toronto Feminist Bird Club. She has worked at the Royal Ontario Museum and a number of environmental organizations.
