The Heritage Committee moves into 2023

Hi everyone.   The Heritage Committee needs more volunteers to bring it into 2023.  The Heritage Committee is a fundraising committee and we donate to help purchase or protect special properties.

The Heritage Committee needs to be revamped due to the COVID restrictions that are being enforced regarding the selling of food.  I am resigning as Coordinator of the Heritage Committee and hopefully someone will come forward to organize this Committee and bring it into 2023.

Decisions to be made are specifically related to food.  If we wish to continue to have our Earth Day Bake Sale and provide baking as part of the Hawk Festival, we need members to take the free online Food Management course offered by the Windsor Essex Health Unit.  One or two people need to take the test, for a cost of $10.00, in order to supervise the food prepared for these events and to attend the events. We would need an approved location for a group to gather and do all the baking, maybe the kitchen at Malden Park or one of the churches would let us use their facilities.  If we decide to give up our fundraising regarding food, new ideas are needed to raise funds.  These decisions can be decided by the Heritage Committee members, lead by the new Coordinator.

Cathy Lapain is no longer able to manage the Bake Sale so a new organizer is needed for this event.  Aileen Petrozzi will continue to organize the Hawk Festival.  I can continue for now with a revised Annual Dinner if it is safe to have one in 2023.

If you have questions regarding the Heritage Committee, please call me (JoAnn 519-734-0056).

Thank you.

National Urban Park update

By |2022-12-09T22:21:11-05:00December 9th, 2022|The Egret Article|

The idea of a National Urban Park in our community is one that seems to invoke interest, excitement and hope to most local nature enthusiasts. The process of how it will happen however, is one that seemingly only brings confusion. There are currently two active approaches, and Club Execs have teamed with the Friends of Ojibway Prairie to not only stay in the loop, but also be part of the conversation during both proceedings. A brief summary will hopefully provide some clarity to our membership.

Local NDP MP Brian Masse has put forth a private member’s bill to amend the Canada National Parks Act to establish and include Ojibway National Urban Park. Bill C-248 delineates the proposed park boundaries using geographic coordinates, and if voted in, will provide protection similar to existing National Parks. The proposed park boundaries include Ojibway Shores. The bill has passed through two readings in the House of Commons and is now in the Report stage. During each stage of the bill, including amendments and motions, the Club, and other local environment-focused groups have co-signed statements from FOOP to ensure ecological integrity remains top priority.

Separate from Bill C-248, Parks Canada, in collaboration with local stakeholders, are in the pre-feasibility phase of creating a National Urban Park in Windsor. This is part of Parks’ plan to establish several National Urban Parks across the country. The proposed park could encompass the current Ojibway Prairie Complex, including Ojibway Shores, along with several other natural lands within proximity. The current timeline would see the National Urban Park finalized in 2025. Similar to the progression of C-248, our Club has worked with FOOP to ensure the voice of our membership, and all who appreciate local nature, is heard during the Parks Canada process.

The two avenues may differ in approach, but both have the same end goal of increasing the protection and awareness of natural areas in and around the Ojibway Prairie Complex. The Club will continue to remain as active as possible, and update our membership accordingly, with both progress and events.

Lil’ REG 30th Anniversary: 16 February, 1991 to 16 February, 2021

By Ian Naisbitt

After a 20-month Covid delay, the Little River Enhancement Group managed to celebrate our 30th Anniversary on Tuesday, 25 October, 2022 at Weston Park in the Town of Tecumseh. Mother Nature served up the perfect day for planting trees. The weather included: a mix of sun and cloud with a bright blue background. There was a moderate zephyr wafting from the south at 20 km/ h and a high of 21 Celsius. The UV index was 4 or moderate.

First off, we need to give a “Tip of the Cap” to Casey Colthurst, Parks Manager/ Town of Tecumseh and Tania Jobin, Ward 5 Tecumseh Councillor for their support in making this project move forward after such a long delay. As well, a big thank you to the Tecumseh Parks Crew for auguring the holes, delivering the large stock trees to the holes, shovelling and raking the soil/ clay mix back into the hole and around the base of the 21 trees. When added to the 9 trees already planted by the Town, it equals 30 trees for 30 years! Mulch will be applied at a later date and a water scheduling program will be started. Watering is very important at this time since the ground was dreadfully dry. The clay soil was crumbly and powdery, which made for easier planting but presents a challenge for the tree roots to establish themselves.

Our small group of volunteers planted a Kentucky Coffee Tree beside the Weston Park fence along North Talbot Road. That way whenever we visit the park we will know exactly which tree we planted.

Kentucky Coffee Trees are a Species at Risk in the Province of Ontario. Their status: “The Kentucky coffee-tree was already assessed as threatened when the Endangered Species Act took effect in 2008.“Threatened” means the species lives in the wild in Ontario, is not endangered, but is likely to become endangered if steps are not taken to address factors threatening it.

Interesting Quick facts about Kentucky Coffee Trees

  • Part of the Latin name for the Kentucky Coffee-tree (Gymnocladus dioica) means “naked branch”, because this tree spends up to nine months of the year without any leaves
  • The only other species in the genus of Kentucky Coffee-tree is a tree that grows only in China
  • Because no native herbivores consume the toxic Kentucky Coffee-tree seeds – and since elephants devour similar seed pods in great quantities – it has been hypothesized that the now-extinct Mastodon may have consumed Kentucky Coffee-tree pods – in fact, Kentucky Coffee-tree may have evolved its unique seeds, which seem unpalatable to native animals, specifically for Mastodon-assisted dispersal.”

Weston Park has a special place in the hearts of the Lil’ Reg members. In the past we participated in Little River Watershed Tours once a year. Our group would visit the sites where volunteers cleaned up the river or planted trees. We checked how much garbage accumulated over the past year at the cleanup sites and estimated the success rate of the trees we planted at other sites. We also looked for potential sites that could use our help. While at Weston Park we hiked around the drain that flowed through the park and we were pleasantly zoomed by a swarm of dragonflies. It was quite a timely and impressive moment for us. Later when our members were brainstorming names for our group and logos, this special moment came to mind. This was our result.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

~Renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead
